Chapter 10: Open Gym at the Once Legendary Kume High Part 2

Kume High School, Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan: Feeling a bit more settled and in his element on the court, Kam, along with Mikio and Ray, are locked in a lively series of pickup basketball games against local alumni in the Kume High gym. As he daps up his cheerful and excited friends after finishing off a smooth drive through the lane, Kam turns to start the next play and is shocked to find three pairs of decidedly less cheerful eyes glaring back at him from the doorway of the gym. “Hey, it’s that blonde dude from back at the old beach court! What the heck is he doing here!?”… And more importantly, what is his connection to Kume High?

Chapter 9: Open Gym at the Once Legendary Kume High Part 1

Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan: After reuniting with Miki, befriending a fellow American named Raymond, and learning of an upcoming 3on3 basketball tournament being held soon on the island, Kam starts to feel as though things might finally be looking up for him in his new home. The three eagerly agree to join up and enter a team in the competition, but since they have never actually played together, they need a place to practice before the tournament beings. Miki informs them of an Open Gym being held at a local high school… Kume High. “The school I’m supposed to attend.” Kam realizes. “Welp, a gym is a gym. What could be special about a school on this island?”

Chapter 8: Life is a b@#ch Pt. 2

Kume Airbase, Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan: With the advice of his Uncle Mack still echoing in his head, Kam watches a spirited pick-up game on the naval base as he sits pondering his future. His attention soon turns to the game, and he is immediately awed by the rough and tumble, physical style of basketball on display between the sailors. Could he play in a game like this? It looks more like a brawl than a game of hoops! He isn’t given a moment to wonder, as before he knows it a stunned Kam is called into the game to take the place of an injured player…

Chapter 7: Life is a b@#ch Pt. 1

Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan: As the days pass by, Kam looks out at the gentle morning surf and slowly comes to the realization that he isn’t suddenly going to wake up back in Germany. He has to face facts, that at least for the time being Kumejima is now HOME. In the hopes of taking his mind off his troubles Loretta asks Kam accompany her to the US Navy base for the day, but what at first appears to be just a dull day at his Mom’s office turns into anything but when Kam receives a visit from and old family friend, and is surprised by an unexpected challenge that asks him the question: are you ready to step up?

Chapter 6: Bikes, Blisters, and Ol’ Blue Eyes

Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan: Kam sits on the local island bus en route to the home of the mysterious Mrs. Kurogawa, hoping to finally acquire his new bike. He gazes out the window at the lush, green, rolling hills of the island’s far side. Having barely seen another home or building for some time now, he thinks to himself “On an already remote island, who on earth would be living up here all by themselves?”

Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan: On a lonely road beside a vast sugarcane field, Kam walks along dribbling his ball, with his head buried in a map. He quickly realizes, that like it or not, he’ll have to get to know his new island home if he wants the new bicycle his Mom just got for him. What does the island hold in store, and more importantly, can he even find the home of this Mrs. Kurogawa?

Chapter 2: Meeting Miki Pt. 1

Kumejima, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan: Not more than 2 weeks removed from his triumph in the German U17 German Club Championship, Kam finds himself on a tiny island in the Pacific, halfway around the world after his Mother is transferred to command the small US Naval base thereon. As Kam lies beneath the rusty rims of an old sun-drenched beachside court, the only sign of basketball he’s found since his arrival in the islands, he laments the loss of his best friends and teammates, Tobi and Eldwin, and skeptically ponders his future. Will he be able to follow his dreams in this new home? Do they even care about basketball here?
